I was tasked to design the replacement for the entry level knife range as the brands’ high volume market proposition. This would replace the current Zyliss offerings with a refreshed set, taking cues from the existing premium offering.

The aim was to make an everyday, low-price item. It would be a 12-piece range of 4 different handles, therefore consideration had to be given to the specific performance of each model.

Research findings were taken from previous studies to inform product features. This was in conjunction with qualitative user testing to review existing and competitor knives. The focus here was on usability and control

The initial design challenge was to integrate the different grip positions in a subtle and comfortable manner. This had to be Balanced against forming a distinctive and yet mainstream aesthetic.

Options were selected and developed further through more resolved artwork. At this point, it was important to explore grip factors and blade features in order to to maximise performance.

3D visualisation & POCs were used to test fit, form, and function across the three sizes. Premium taper ground blades were specified, which is uncommon at this price point, and sheaths were designed to amplify key features

Multiple off-tool sampling stages allowed incremental improvement of fits and finish for production

These were taken through tooling with few issues along the way. They have been received extremely well by the market and is a key SKU for the business going forward.
